Honduras: Legal proceedings continue for Juan Orlando Hernández and Alexander Ardón

In Honduras, legal proceedings are advancing for two high-profile cases involving former officials. Former President Juan Orlando Hernández is facing an initial hearing in the Pandora II case, where he is accused of fraud and money laundering involving the alleged diversion of public funds for political activities. His defense has presented 36 pieces of evidence and has requested the absolute nullity of the proceedings. The hearing is scheduled to continue on Wednesday, August 26, to evaluate expert testimonies and move toward final conclusions.

Separately, a Honduran court has acquitted former mayor Alexander Ardón of money laundering charges. The court ruled that the Public Ministry failed to provide sufficient evidence to establish criminal responsibility, noting that a mathematical error by a prosecution expert hindered the case. While Ardón has previously pleaded guilty to drug-related offenses in the United States, the court in Honduras found the current allegations regarding unexplained assets insufficient for conviction. Following the acquittal, the court ordered the revocation of his preventive detention.
