Luisa González disqualified from Manabí prefecture race by Ecuador's TCE
Ecuador's Tribunal Contencioso Electoral (TCE) has unanimously upheld the disqualification of Luisa González as a candidate for the Prefect of Manabí in the upcoming November 29, 2026, elections. The ruling, which follows decisions by the Manabí Electoral Board and the National Electoral Council (CNE), maintains that González failed to meet the Pachakutik movement's internal requirement of two years of active membership.
González, a former presidential candidate for the Revolución Ciudadana (RC) party, sought the candidacy through Pachakutik because her own party remains suspended following a judicial decision related to an investigation into alleged organized crime and illicit campaign financing. Following the TCE ruling, González and leaders of the RC have accused the government of President Daniel Noboa of orchestrating maneuvers to eliminate political opposition.
In a parallel development, the CNE rejected the candidacy of Jaime Estrada for the same prefecture. Unlike González, Estrada's disqualification was based on a procedural error: he failed to submit a signed formal acceptance form after being re-registered by the local Sí Podemos movement. In response to these disqualifications, Gabriela Rivadeneira, president of the RC, has called for a null vote in Manabí, suggesting that a high volume of null ballots could trigger new elections.
