Ecuador electoral board rejects Luisa González's candidacy in Manabí
The Manabí Provincial Electoral Board has rejected the registration of former presidential candidate Luisa González for the upcoming regional elections in Ecuador. The board ruled that González and her running mate, Gabriel Giler Reyes, do not meet the Pachakutik movement's internal requirement of having been members or permanent adherents for at least two years.
The decision followed objections filed by the ADN party and the CREO-Sociedad Patriótica alliance. Pachakutik has been granted a 48-hour window to rectify or replace its candidates for the prefecture and vice-prefecture of Manabí. González has signaled her intent to appeal the decision, arguing that Article 112 of the Constitution allows political organizations to present invited candidates who are not formal members.
Simultaneously, opposition leaders from the Alianza Ciudadana—comprising Revolución Ciudadana, Unidad Popular, the Socialist Party, and the Todos movement—have accused President Daniel Noboa's administration of political persecution. They cited the rejection of González's candidacy and a legal complaint filed against Quito Mayor Pabel Muñoz as evidence of an attempt to disqualify opposition figures ahead of the November elections.
