Luján hotels targeted by digital scams ahead of Pope Leo XIV visit
Criminal groups are exploiting the high demand for accommodation during the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV to Argentina to carry out digital scams. Most reported cases are concentrated in Luján, where fraudsters are creating fake social media profiles using the names, photographs, and logos of legitimate hotels to offer non-existent rooms.
In one reported instance, victims were lured by ‘Papal Promos’ on Instagram, which directed them to WhatsApp conversations. Scammers offered packages for rooms including full board and parking, requesting large transfers as deposits. One victim reported losing 500,000 pesos after attempting to book a stay through a profile impersonating the Real Hotel Luján. Other establishments, such as Hotel Catedral, have also reported fraudulent advertising using their identity and images of the Basilica to deceive travelers. Authorities and local businesses are urging travelers to exercise extreme caution when making reservations.
