Luka Modrić seeks to enjoy his final World Cup as Croatia captain

Luka Modrić, 40, will captain Croatia at what he has described as his last World Cup, the tournament in North America in 2026. It will be his fifth appearance at the finals. Modrić, who plays for AC Milan after a decade at Real Madrid, said his goal is to "enjoy every match, every training with the boys" as Croatia open Group K against England in Arlington, Texas. He noted that the younger players in the squad make him feel younger and provide extra energy.

Croatian coach Zlatko Dalić echoed the optimism, praising England’s quality and Harry Kane while confirming the team is well‑prepared for the opening clash. The squad also features veteran Ivan Perišić, Manchester City duo Joško Gvardiol and Mateo Kovačić, and 19‑year‑old defender Luka Vusković.

The match will be one of the early highlights of the 2026 World Cup, which also features stars such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
