Lukashenko proposes US-Gazprom-Belarus fertilizer plant partnership
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has proposed a joint venture between the United States, Russia’s Gazprom, and Belarus to construct a nitrogen fertilizer plant. Lukashenko stated that he has already reached an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin for Gazprom’s participation in the project and that a site for the facility has been selected.
The proposal suggests using American technology to meet the demand for nitrogen fertilizers. Lukashenko noted that if the United States declines the offer, the project will proceed with Russia and the resulting fertilizers will be sold on the international market. This initiative follows comments from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding potential deals to purchase Belarusian potash at prices lower than those currently paid to Canada.
The proposal comes amid a period of shifting dynamics, including the partial easing of U.S. sanctions on certain Belarusian fertilizer enterprises following the release of political prisoners. While the project aims to combine American technology with Russian investment and Belarusian production, the potential for U.S. companies to partner with Gazprom remains an unusual prospect given Belarus’s close military and political ties to Russia.
