Belarusian economic diplomacy and trade proposals
Overview
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has proposed various international economic partnerships to bolster the nation's industrial and trade sectors.
In late September, Lukashenko proposed a joint venture involving the United States, Russia’s Gazprom, and Belarus to build a nitrogen fertilizer plant. The plan suggests utilizing American technology alongside Russian investment to meet global demand. Lukashenko indicated that if the United States declines, the project will proceed with Russia alone.
By mid-October, Lukashenko shifted focus toward regional cooperation with Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. He expressed frustration over these neighbors' refusal to purchase Belarusian wood pellets despite rising fuel costs. Lukashenko suggested that economic cooperation could serve as a way to “avoid war,” noting that if regional neighbors continue to refuse trade, Belarus will increase domestic use of the pellets.
