Lula and Trump: Diplomatic tensions analyzed following UN speech

Legal expert and human rights authority Flávia Piovesan has suggested that a potential reelection of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva might not be recognized by a Donald Trump administration, despite recognition from the rest of the international community. Piovesan noted that Trump’s unpredictability and alignment with the far-right could lead to such a diplomatic rift.

In her analysis, Piovesan characterized President Lula’s recent speech at the United Nations General Assembly as a signal to the international community regarding Brazil’s democratic path and the principle of self-determination. She argued that a radical alignment between Brazil and the United States would be detrimental, as it could subject Brazil to American tutelage rather than allowing the nation to decide its own future.
