Brazil: Liberal Party recognizes Lula's reelection victory FAST-MOVING
The Liberal Party (PL), led by Valdemar Costa Neto, officially recognized Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's victory in the Brazilian presidential election. While accepting the results proclaimed by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), the party requested clarifications regarding what it termed “eleitoreiras” measures, specifically the expansion of public spending on social benefits just before the vote.
This institutional stance contrasts with the initial reaction of the defeated candidate, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who refused to recognize the results. Bolsonaro had cited the Supreme Federal Court's decision to extend voting hours as a reason for his contestation. However, the PL's official position focuses on the economic impact of government spending on the electoral fairness.
Lula secured approximately 51.8% of the valid votes, while Flávio Bolsonaro received 48.2%. Following the announcement, international leaders, including former Dominican President Leonel Fernández and Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi, offered congratulations. Additionally, Chilean President José Antonio Kast confirmed he will attend Lula's inauguration in 2027.
