Lula demands Brazilian control over rare earth mining
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has called for strict national control over the exploitation of rare earth elements and critical minerals. During a public speech, Lula warned against repeating historical patterns of resource exploitation.
To illustrate his point, he cited a phrase by Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano: “Brazilian gold left holes in Brazil, temples in Portugal and factories in England.” Lula emphasized that while he welcomes foreign investment in the rare earth sector, such companies must operate under Brazilian regulations and command.
The President framed the upcoming elections as a choice between strengthening democracy and choosing “barbarism,” suggesting that the management of national wealth is a central issue for voters.
