Lula seeks direct channel with Trump to bypass US Secretary Rubio

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is attempting to manage escalating tensions with the United States by establishing a direct communication channel with President Donald Trump. This move aims to bypass U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has been a vocal critic of the Brazilian administration and recently excluded Brazil from a list of friendly nations.

Lula has described his recent conversation with Trump as “very civilized and very respectful,” suggesting that direct contact should proceed “without intermediaries” to avoid the influence of the “second tier” of the U.S. government. The diplomatic friction follows a period of heightened tension, including a trade dispute that resulted in the U.S. imposing a 25% tariff on certain Brazilian goods.

As Brazil approaches general elections in October, Lula is campaigning on a platform of national sovereignty and strengthening ties with the BRICS nations and the Global South. His agenda stands in contrast to the political movement associated with former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was sentenced to over 27 years in prison in September 2025.
