LUMA Energy pledges court fight as Puerto Rico seeks to void its power contract

LUMA Energy’s chief executive José Pérez said the company will address the Puerto Rico government’s lawsuit over its transmission and distribution contract in the courts, insisting no contractual breach has been proven. Pérez warned that nullifying the contract could leave the island without a power operator, describing the possible outcome as "chaos" for Puerto Ricans.

Separately, LUMA attorney Fran Torres Viada alleged that Secretary of the Governorship Francisco Domenech pressured officials to accelerate the contract’s cancellation and to consider alternative operators. The company filed a counter‑claim seeking up to $4.5 billion in damages, calling the government’s action “frivolous” and politically motivated. The dispute highlights a broader clash between the administration of Governor Jenniffer González Colón and LUMA over the island’s energy system and related public‑policy issues.
