LUMA Energy schedules island-wide power upgrades while Vieques suffers outage

LUMA Energy said that from June 22 to June 28 it will carry out scheduled maintenance and upgrades on Puerto Rico’s electric grid. The work, which will cause temporary interruptions, includes line repairs, equipment replacement, vegetation removal and infrastructure modernization across dozens of municipalities such as San Juan, Guaynabo, Mayagüez, Ponce and many others.

On the same week an unexpected fault on transmission line 5400 caused a full power loss on the island of Vieques, leaving all customers without electricity. A brief outage also hit Culebra before GeneraPR generators restored service around 16:30. LUMA’s spokesperson Hugo Sorrentini said crews were dispatched from Fajardo, including helicopter support, to repair the fallen conductor and restore power as quickly as possible.
