Luma Energy warns of AI‑generated phone scams targeting Puerto Rico consumers

The Department of Consumer Affairs (DACO) in Puerto Rico announced that its Unit for Detection of Fraudulent Schemes identified a new telephone scam. Fraudulent calls, generated by AI deep‑fake technology and using toll‑free numbers, claim consumers owe money to the private electric operator Luma Energy and threaten service suspension if payment is not made. DACO Secretary Hiram Torres Montalvo said the calls originate from abroad, likely Asia Minor, and bear no relation to Luma Energy, which confirmed it never contacts customers for payment demands. Consumers were urged not to respond, to verify any bills on Luma’s official website or app, and to avoid providing personal or financial information. The detection unit, created in 2023, continues to monitor and inform the public about such schemes.
