Lumey Guzmán released from Cuban prison after criticizing power outages

Cuban activist Lumey Guzmán Fernández has been released from prison after posting bail of 7,000 Cuban pesos. Her release follows her detention on July 9 for a Facebook video in which she criticized the government regarding extended power outages in her Alamar neighborhood, which reportedly lasted over 90 hours.

Guzmán was charged with disrespect after addressing President Miguel Díaz-Canel, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, and Lis Cuesta in her video. During her period of preventive detention, her family reported that she suffered significant weight loss and mental health deterioration while being held incommunicado at various facilities, including El Vivac and El Guatao prison.

While she is no longer incarcerated, her legal process continues. The organization Justicia 11J stated that her release does not end the legal pressure, describing the use of the judicial system to target dissenting voices as a form of institutionalized repression. The case occurs amid a broader electrical crisis in Cuba, with recent reports indicating significant power generation deficits.
