Cuban activist detentions and releases

Recent reports highlight the release of Cuban activists following periods of detention related to political dissent and criticism of the government.

Fernando Michael Bárzaga Mompié, a member of the opposition group Cuba Independiente y Democrática, was released from a prison in Manzanillo after serving a five-year sentence for charges of public disorder and assault linked to the July 11, 2021, protests. During his incarceration, Bárzaga reported experiencing “inhumane conditions,” including food and medicine shortages and psychological torture.

Lumey Guzmán Fernández was also released from prison after posting bail following her detention for a video criticizing government handling of extended power outages. Charged with disrespect for addressing high-ranking officials, Guzmán’s family reported she suffered weight loss and mental health deterioration while held incommunicado. While released, her legal process continues, which advocacy groups describe as part of a broader pattern of “institutionalized repression” against dissenting voices.
