LUMI-AI supercomputer project to expand European AI capacity

Europe is developing LUMI-AI, a next-generation supercomputer to be located in Finland, designed to serve as the computational foundation for the LUMI AI Factory. The project aims to provide ten times the AI computing capacity of the current LUMI system, which is currently ranked 11th on the TOP500 list.

EuroHPC JU has awarded a contract worth approximately 387.8 million euros to the company Bull for the construction, installation, and maintenance of the system. The hardware will be centered on AMD technology, specifically utilizing AMD Instinct MI430X accelerators and sixth-generation AMD EPYC processors with up to 256 cores. This architecture is intended to support both massive AI model training and high-precision scientific simulations.

The LUMI-AI project is being developed by a consortium including Finland, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland. The system is scheduled to become operational in the second half of 2027 at the IT Center for Science (CSC) in Kajaani. Additionally, LUMI-AI will be integrated with the LUMI-IQ quantum computing platform to explore the synergy between high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum technologies.
