Lunar exploration advances with new satellite projects

Researchers at the University of Cambridge are proposing CosmoCube, a suitcase-sized satellite designed to orbit the far side of the Moon. The mission aims to detect the 21-centimeter radio line emitted by neutral hydrogen from the early universe. By capturing these signals, which have been stretched by cosmic expansion, scientists hope to study the cosmic dark ages and gain insights into the nature of dark matter.

Separately, NASA is preparing the CAPSTONE 02 mission, scheduled for launch in 2027. This mission will utilize two 400 kg satellites designed by Terran Orbital to test autonomous maneuvering and rendezvous capabilities in lunar orbit. One satellite will act as a pursuer and the other as a target to refine technologies essential for the Artemis program and future deep space exploration. The mission will employ NASA navigation software and optical sensors to determine relative positioning without constant reliance on Earth-based stations.
