Luxor solar eclipse 2027 drives interest in Egyptian tourism
The solar eclipse scheduled for August 2, 2027, is driving significant interest in astronomical tourism, specifically targeting Luxor, Egypt. During the event, Luxor will experience approximately six minutes and 22 seconds of total darkness, a duration significantly longer than the two-minute maximum seen during recent eclipses in Spain.
Spanish tour operators have already begun incorporating the phenomenon into their travel programming. Specialized itineraries are being developed that combine the eclipse with cultural tours, including Nile cruises and visits to sites such as Cairo, Abu Simbel, and the Grand Egyptian Museum. This surge in interest follows the economic impact of the 2026 eclipse in Spain, which was estimated by the Ministry of Economy to have generated 347 million euros and attracted over 446,000 additional tourists.
The 2027 event arrives as Egypt seeks to further recover its tourism market in Spain following recent geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East.
