Luxury fashion giants face sales slump and stock declines
Major European luxury fashion houses, including LVMH, Hermès, and Kering (owner of Gucci), are facing a significant downturn in sales and market value. After years of record growth, leading brands are experiencing a slowdown as even wealthy consumers adopt more cautious spending habits.
Stock prices for top luxury producers have dropped to levels not seen in over a decade. Specifically, Hermès reported disappointing third-quarter sales, leading to a single-day stock decline of nearly 5%. Both Hermès and LVMH have seen their share values lose approximately 40% since the beginning of the year.
A primary driver of this decline is the cooling demand from Chinese consumers. Historically a vital market for European luxury goods, the Chinese high-income segment is currently exercising greater financial restraint due to ongoing issues in the domestic real estate market, financial uncertainty, and stricter controls on overseas assets.
