Luzon class suspensions increase due to monsoon rains

Heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon, or habagat, have triggered widespread class suspensions across various parts of Luzon, Philippines. Local government units in provinces such as Pampanga and Pangasinan have implemented shifts to alternative learning modes, including modular and online delivery, to mitigate risks from persistent flooding and inclement weather.

In Central Luzon, towns including San Simon and Santo Tomas in Pampanga have suspended face-to-face classes for all levels in both public and private schools. In the Cordillera Administrative Region, Kibungan in Benguet has also suspended in-person classes.

PAGASA reports that the monsoon is bringing significant rainfall to several regions. Forecasts indicate that areas such as Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro may experience heavy rainfall ranging from 100 to 200 millimeters. Authorities have warned of potential flooding and landslides, particularly in mountainous areas, due to the accumulation of rain from previous weather events.
