Weather-related class suspensions in the Philippines

In late July 2026, several regions in the Philippines experienced class suspensions due to a combination of Tropical Depression Kiyapo, the Southwest Monsoon, and the scheduling of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s fifth State of the Nation Address. In the Soccsksargen region, heavy rains and flooding led to the suspension of face-to-face classes and the implementation of work-from-home arrangements for provincial staff.

By early August, continuous rainfall from the Southwest Monsoon caused widespread class suspensions across various parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila, Bulacan, and Batangas. These weather conditions resulted in significant flooding in several cities, such as Pasig and Quezon City, prompting educational institutions to cancel in-person instruction or shift to virtual learning modes.

By August 9, 2026, the southwest monsoon (Habagat), intensified by tropical cyclones Luis and Maymay, had caused widespread flooding and landslides across eight regions, affecting over 380,000 people. Official reports confirmed at least six fatalities due to drowning, landslides, rockslides, and electrocution. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported damage to 148 houses, with 10 completely destroyed.

In response to the intensifying conditions, President Marcos Jr. ordered government agencies to remain on heightened alert. Mass class suspensions were declared for August 10 across provinces including Abra, Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, and parts of Metro Manila. In Baguio City, landslides disrupted travel and left several people missing. Meanwhile, the SM Group opened several shopping malls in Metro Manila to serve as temporary shelters for displaced residents.
