Lyman region: Russian bloggers report Ukrainian counterattacks

Russian military bloggers have acknowledged that Ukrainian forces are conducting counterattacks near Lyman in eastern Ukraine. Some commentators report that Russian troops have been forced to withdraw from forward positions as the tactical situation for Moscow deteriorates.

These bloggers have criticized the Russian military command for providing 'beautiful reports'—a term used to describe exaggerated or false battlefield accounts that present an overly optimistic view of the frontline. Such misinformation is cited as a source of operational risk, as it can lead to inaccurate planning and difficulties in calling for fire missions in areas previously claimed to be under control.

The reports follow a dispute regarding the town of Sviatohirsk. While Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Russian Defence Ministry claimed control of the settlement on September 1, Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi of Ukraine’s Third Army Corps later released video evidence demonstrating that the town remains under Ukrainian control. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted that while the full scale of the Ukrainian operation remains unclear due to operational secrecy, its current mapping may underestimate the extent of Ukrainian progress in the region.
