Lynx killed near Złocieńiec leaves three kittens orphaned

A female lynx was found dead in the Kokna River near Złocieńiec in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship on August 7. An autopsy conducted by veterinarian Roman Lizoń confirmed that the four-year-old female was the mother of at least three kittens, which were approximately three months old at the time of her death.

Investigations by the District Prosecutor's Office in Drawsko Pomorskie indicate the animal was likely killed with a hunting rifle, as X-ray scans revealed metal fragments and bullet pieces within the body. Authorities are investigating whether the body was intentionally moved to the river to conceal evidence of the crime.

The lynx is a strictly protected species in Poland. Naturalists are searching for the orphaned kittens, though their survival is considered highly unlikely without their mother to provide food and protection. Perpetrators of such illegal killings face up to five years in prison.
