Illegal lynx killing in Poland

Overview

A female lynx was discovered dead in the Kokna River near Złocieniec, Poland. Initial investigations by the West Pomeranian Nature Society and local police suggested the animal had been shot, as bullet fragments were recovered from its body. At the time of discovery, the animal was in an advanced state of decomposition, leaving experts unable to confirm if she was a nursing mother.

Subsequent autopsy results conducted by veterinarian Roman Lizoń confirmed that the four-year-old female was the mother of at least three kittens, approximately three months old. The District Prosecutor's Office in Drawsko Pomorskie is investigating the death, noting that X-ray scans revealed metal fragments consistent with a hunting rifle. Authorities are also examining whether the body was intentionally moved to the river to hide evidence.

As the lynx is a strictly protected species in Poland, the incident is being treated as an illegal killing. Naturalists are attempting to locate the orphaned kittens, though their survival is deemed highly unlikely. Perpetrators of such crimes face up to five years in prison.
