M23 rebel bombings in South Kivu, DRC kill 58, injure 82

Drone bombings attributed to the AFC‑M23 rebel group and its allies hit the Itombwe sector of Mwenga territory in South Kivu, killing at least 58 civilians and wounding 82. The attacks destroyed several villages, forced dozens of families to flee, and compounded an existing Ebola outbreak.

Despite a recently signed cease‑fire between the Congolese government and the M23 coalition, heavy fighting continues across North‑Kivu and South‑Kivu. Clashes involve the Congolese army, local self‑defence groups (Wazalendo), and M23‑aligned forces, with reports of drone strikes, displacement of thousands, and heightened humanitarian needs throughout the region.
