Maaslijn railway electrification cleared by Dutch Council of State

The Dutch Council of State (Raad van State) has ruled that the electrification and expansion of the Maaslijn railway can proceed, rejecting major objections from local residents and businesses. The project, authorized by the provinces of Limburg and Noord-Brabant, involves electrifying the line between Roermond and Nijmegen, adding double tracks in certain sections, and increasing train speeds.

Objectors from areas including Grubbenvorst, Reuver, Castenray, Smakt, and Cuijk expressed concerns regarding noise and vibration. However, the court found that sufficient research had been conducted and that noise standards would not be exceeded. To mitigate impact, the court noted that preventive measures such as rail dampers and damping mats have been advised.

The ruling also addressed legal flaws in the integration plan. The court annulled the decision for double tracks in Smakt and removed two temporary work sites in Limburg and Brabant from the plans. These corrections effectively finalize the legal procedure for the Maaslijn project.
