Maaslijn railway modernization and electrification

The Maaslijn railway modernization project, which aims to electrify the connection between Nijmegen and Roermond, has moved through significant legal and operational phases.

The Dutch Council of State ruled that the electrification and expansion can proceed, rejecting objections from local residents and businesses regarding noise and vibration. While the court annulled specific decisions regarding double tracks in Smakt and removed two temporary work sites, it determined that sufficient research had been conducted to ensure noise standards would not be exceeded. Mitigation measures, such as rail dampers and damping mats, were noted as part of the plan.

As part of the ongoing infrastructure work, the railway line between Roermond and Venlo is scheduled for a nine-day closure from September 12 to September 20. This period involves extensive modernization, including the installation of foundations for overhead lines, track adjustments at Tegelen station, and the implementation of vibration-reducing pads in Venlo and Swalmen. Replacement buses will serve the affected areas during this time.
