Maastricht University suspends student over Hamas attack video

Maastricht University has suspended a Palestinian student from Gaza following the circulation of a social media video. In the footage, the 22-year-old student is seen watching clips of the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel. While pointing to masked individuals in the video, the student states, “This is me,” and gestures toward the camera.

The university stated the suspension was implemented due to concerns regarding the safety of students and staff and to prevent potential unrest on campus. While the student claimed involvement in the attacks, authorities have not confirmed the veracity of this statement. Maastricht University noted it does not have the jurisdiction to investigate the background or authenticity of the social media post.

Reports indicate the university assisted the student in coming to the Netherlands by submitting an application for a provisional residence permit (MVV) in April. The student, who has a significant following on Instagram, has also posted content regarding martyrdom and jihadist gestures. The university is currently reviewing the case to determine if and under what conditions the student may continue his studies.
