Macau advances economic diversification and regional integration strategies
Macau is advancing its economic diversification and high-quality development through strategic planning and regional integration with the Greater Bay Area. The upcoming 2026–2030 five-year plan focuses on the “one center, one platform, one base” strategy, targeting emerging industries such as traditional Chinese medicine, modern finance, high technology, and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions). A key goal is to increase the value added of non-gaming industries to approximately 60% of GDP by 2030.
Integration with the Hengqin Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone serves as a critical driver for this transition. Recent initiatives include talent exchange programs between Hengqin and Macau institutions, such as the University of Macau and the Macau University of Science and Technology, to facilitate research and professional development. Additionally, the Macau Investment and Promotion Bureau has held promotional events in Shenzhen and Guangzhou to help enterprises utilize Macau as a gateway to Portuguese and Spanish-speaking markets.
Furthermore, the Macau World Skills Competition Comprehensive Training Base has been designated as a national-level training center for the 48th WorldSkills Competition in the hospitality sector. This facility aims to bridge international skill standards with local talent training, fostering a high-skilled workforce to support the region's evolving economic landscape.
