Macedonia confirms two West Nile virus cases at University Infectious Diseases Clinic

The University Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Fever in Skopje has laboratory‑confirmed two cases of West Nile virus infection, announced by clinic director Dr Fadil Cana. Both patients are hospitalized, placed under continuous medical supervision and are receiving treatment according to current medical recommendations.

West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquito bites; most infections are asymptomatic or cause mild illness, while older adults and immunocompromised individuals can develop severe neurological complications. The clinic urged the public to use repellents, wear long‑sleeved clothing, install window screens and eliminate standing water to reduce mosquito breeding. Authorities stressed there is no cause for panic but advised heightened caution during the summer mosquito season. The clinic continues to coordinate with health officials and monitor the regional epidemiological situation, noting that other West Nile cases have been reported in Europe this season.
