Macedonia sees 70% jump in domestic‑violence crimes in May 2026

In May 2026 the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Macedonia recorded 191 domestic‑violence offences, a 70.5% increase compared with the same month a year earlier. The majority were bodily‑injury cases (130) and security‑endangerment incidents (52). Among the most serious offences were one homicide in the Manastir police district and two severe bodily‑injury cases.

The Skopje Interior Work sector reported the highest number of cases (62). Overall, 137 criminal charges were filed in the month, up 71.3% from May 2025, targeting 144 alleged perpetrators and involving 143 victims. Eighteen charges were processed under accelerated procedures—a rise of 800% year‑on‑year—resulting in pre‑trial detention for 15 suspects and protective measures for 48 individuals. Additionally, officials logged 19 violations, mainly physical assaults and verbal abuse, and received 499 complaints, the bulk of which came from the Skopje and Stip police districts.
