North Macedonia domestic & youth violence surge

Entities: 34‑year‑old male suspect · Public Prosecutor's Office in Skopje · 24‑year‑old male suspect · Macedonia · Petrovac

Overview

The wave of domestic‑violence that began in early May 2026 has continued into late July. Police in Gevgelija arrested a 67‑year‑old man on 19 July for assaulting his wife and, on 20 July, detained a 49‑year‑old suspect accused of attacking his partner in Bogdanci. These arrests add to the string of recent detentions across Valandovo, Radoviš, Štip, Kavadarci, Ohrid, Skopje, Kumanovo, Bitola and other towns.

On 23 July prosecutors filed charges in Skopje and Tetovo against three men for domestic‑violence‑related threats. In Skopje, a 30‑year‑old was charged after brandishing a knife and damaging a vehicle while threatening former employers. In Tetovo, a 50‑year‑old who assaulted his wife and a 32‑year‑old who assaulted his father were each charged with intimidation and dangerous‑weapon offences. Prosecutors have sought precautionary measures such as residence‑leave bans, licence suspensions and reporting obligations.

Authorities say formal charges will follow once documentation is completed, and the Interior Ministry’s “Breaking the cycle of violence” programme remains under parliamentary scrutiny. UNICEF continues to urge stronger legal protections, school‑based interventions and online‑safety measures for children amid the ongoing surge in both adult and youth aggression.
