Maceió Civil Defense inspects 777 abandoned properties

The Civil Defense of Maceió has conducted 777 inspections of abandoned and unoccupied properties since 2021 to prevent structural collapses and accidents. Of these inspections, 466 were in abandoned residences and 311 were in unoccupied buildings.

Engineers and agents analyze structural integrity to identify risks to pedestrians and neighboring homes, particularly during rainy seasons when saturated soil increases collapse potential. When a real risk is confirmed, the agency recommends preventive demolition to ensure public safety.

Authorities encourage residents to report buildings showing signs of compromise, such as significant cracks or leaning walls, via official channels including the 199 emergency number.
