Maceió structural risk management

Overview

The Civil Defense of Maceió has been conducting structural inspections of abandoned and unoccupied properties to mitigate risks of collapse and accidents. Since 2021, authorities have inspected 777 properties, including 466 abandoned residences and 311 unoccupied buildings, to protect pedestrians and neighboring structures from hazards exacerbated by rainy seasons.

Technical assessments are managed by Civil Defense engineers who determine necessary actions based on structural integrity. While some issues may only require monitoring or repairs, the agency mandates total or partial interdiction when there is a direct threat to life from landslides, soil erosion, or instability. In instances where interdiction is required, the Civil Defense Social Directorate provides support to the affected families.
