Maceió security agents seize stolen energy cables

The Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security (Semsc) seized eight bags of energy cables in downtown Maceió on Monday. The material was discovered near the former Bompreço parking lot on Buarque de Macedo Avenue during intelligence monitoring operations.

Security Secretary Thiago Prado stated that the origin of the cables—whether from public buildings or private companies—has not yet been identified. He noted that such thefts cause an estimated annual loss of R$ 200,000 to public coffers and cause significant disruptions to the population, including loss of street lighting.

The area is frequently targeted by security teams due to issues involving drug trafficking and substance dependency. Authorities believe criminals use the location to hide stolen wires and strip their plastic coating before selling them to receivers. The Maceió Municipal Civil Guard (GCMM) is conducting ostensive patrols to identify and arrest those responsible.
