Macron's Bastille Day Parade Highlights European Military Build‑up Amid Russian Threat Claims
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Gruschko told the newspaper Iswestija that NATO and the EU are preparing for a military confrontation with Russia by 2030, likening current plans to the 1941 German invasion of the Soviet Union. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that discussions in Europe about reviving German military power could quickly lead to a direct NATO‑Russia clash and risk a nuclear escalation.
Against this backdrop French President Emmanuel Macron gave the 14 July 2026 Bastille‑Day parade the motto “European strategic awakening”. The ceremony in Paris featured about 10,000 soldiers – up from roughly 7,000 in previous years – and a mixed French‑Ukrainian flight of Mirage‑2000 jets painted in Ukraine’s blue‑yellow colours, all aircraft carrying mock weapons. Troops from Germany, Sweden, Greece, the United Kingdom and units stationed on NATO’s eastern flank in Romania and Estonia participated, with representatives from 37 nations, NATO officials and EU leaders such as Ursula von der Leyen in attendance. The event was presented as a showcase of European solidarity with Ukraine and a deterrent stance toward Russia, while domestic critics noted the parade’s militaristic tone amid France’s internal challenges and Macron’s waning popularity.
