Mactan-Cebu International Airport achieves Level 2 carbon accreditation

Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) has become the first and only airport in the Philippines to achieve Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation from Airports Council International in Asia-Pacific and Middle East (ACI APAC & MID).

The accreditation follows the completion of a verified greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory and the implementation of carbon management strategies that have reduced carbon intensity per passenger movement and cargo tonnage. Key environmental measures include the use of a 1.64 MWp rooftop solar array, a building management system for energy efficiency, smart sensors, LED lighting, and improved HVAC maintenance protocols.

MCIA has set a target to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emission intensity by more than 90 percent by 2029, serving as a milestone toward a goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Recent operational improvements include the introduction of bridge-mounted equipment to provide aircraft with power and cooling without burning jet fuel, as well as the transition toward electric ground support equipment.
