Madeira issues orange alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms
The Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall and potential thunderstorms across the archipelago. Based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), weather conditions are expected to worsen significantly.
An orange alert has been issued for the southern coast and mountainous regions of Madeira, effective from midnight until 09:00 on Sunday, November 1. During this period, heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms are anticipated. Yellow alerts have also been issued for the northern coast and Porto Santo, as well as for the island of Porto Santo on Sunday morning.
Authorities warn of several risks, including flash floods, urban flooding, landslides, falling trees or branches, and slippery road surfaces. The SRPC recommends that residents take preventive measures, such as cleaning drainage systems, securing outdoor objects, and avoiding unnecessary travel through flood-prone or mountainous areas.
