Madeira engineers launch landslide risk monitoring in São Vicente

The Regional Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LREC) has launched a new monitoring plan to identify risk zones along the northern coast of Madeira, specifically near São Vicente. This action follows a recent landslide that partially obstructed the Via Expresso near the Ladeira da Vinha tunnel.

The monitoring process will occur in two phases. The first phase involves identifying new risk points and characterizing geological pathologies in the escarpment overlooking the VR2 highway. The second phase will involve data collection and three-dimensional modeling of the escarpment to analyze the potential projection of new rock blocks from critical points.

Technical teams will use geolocation to identify cracks, fractures, and unstable blocks. This data will enable 3D simulations of rockfall trajectories, allowing authorities to anticipate dangerous blocks and identify areas at risk of future landslides. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort by the Regional Government to mitigate geological risks in the area.
