Geological risk management in Madeira

Overview

A rockfall near the Ladeira da Vinha tunnel on the Via Expresso highway between São Vicente and Porto Moniz caused the closure of a section of the road on the north coast of Madeira. The incident reportedly affected at least three vehicles and resulted in four injuries.

Following an inspection by rock specialists from the Regional Directorate of Roads, the highway was reopened to traffic. To address the geological risks, the Regional Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LREC) launched a monitoring plan on August 24.

The technical intervention involves a two-phase process: identifying geological pathologies and risk points, followed by data collection and three-dimensional modeling of the escarpment. This modeling aims to simulate rockfall trajectories to help authorities design mitigation measures and anticipate future landslides.
