Madeira introduces new agile firefighting helicopter
The Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) is introducing a second firefighting helicopter to enhance its aerial response capabilities. The new aircraft, contracted through the Portuguese Air Force from the company Helibravo, is scheduled to begin official operations on October 1 and will remain active until November 30.
Designed to be lighter and more agile than the medium-sized helicopter currently in use, the new aircraft will prioritize initial attacks on rural fires. The goal is to have the first aerial unit on the ground within 20 minutes of an alert. The helicopter can carry a pilot and five firefighters, has a 90-minute flight autonomy, and is equipped with a 750-liter water bucket.
While the new helicopter handles rapid fire response, the existing medium-sized helicopter will shift its focus primarily to search and rescue operations, though it may still assist in firefighting. Regional officials noted that while the deployment was delayed from its original schedule, the addition is critical for managing fire risks during the autumn months.
