Aerial firefighting helicopter deployments

Overview

Various regions are deploying aerial firefighting resources to combat vegetation and rural fires.

In France, water bomber helicopters have been utilized across different territories. In Mayotte, a rented aircraft has been used since mid-August to address fires driven by drought and wind, performing over 350 water drops by drawing from local lagoons. In the Aude department, the Morane 11 helicopter provided support from July through late September, completing 710 water drops to protect homes and assist ground teams.

In Madeira, the Regional Civil Protection Service is introducing a second, more agile firefighting helicopter via a contract with Helibravo. Scheduled to operate from October 1 to November 30, this lighter aircraft is intended to prioritize rapid initial attacks on rural fires, aiming for a response time within 20 minutes of an alert. This deployment allows the region’s existing medium-sized helicopter to shift its primary focus toward search and rescue operations.
