Madeira weather alert: Heavy rain and flooding risks expected
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and the Regional Civil Protection Service have issued warnings for the Autonomous Region of Madeira regarding deteriorating weather conditions. While light rain is expected through Friday, October 30, conditions are forecast to worsen starting Saturday, October 31, with heavy precipitation likely affecting the southern slopes and highlands.
Authorities have warned of risks including flash floods, inundations, mass movements, and falling debris. Civil Protection advises residents to clear drainage systems, secure outdoor objects, and avoid driving through flooded roads or parking in areas vulnerable to landslides. Maritime agitation is also expected, with waves reaching up to 2.5 meters on the northern coast and Porto Santo.
Additionally, the newly appointed Operational Commander of Madeira, Major-General Lopes Garcia, indicated that efforts are underway to potentially update Air Force resources in the region to support operational readiness and coordination.
