Madlanga Commission Sets August 14 Date for Suliman Carrim Testimony

North West businessman Suliman Carrim has been ordered to appear in person before South Africa’s Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on 14 August. The commission, chaired by Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, ruled that any future request for exemption must be backed by an independent medical assessment, with the report due by 12 August.

Carrim’s previous absences were attributed to hospitalisation after a suspected heart attack, but the commission has questioned the legitimacy of his illness, noting evidence that he may have left the facility while purportedly under treatment. His testimony is expected to address allegations surrounding the SAPS Medicare24 contract, including claims of political interference, procurement irregularities and questionable financial transactions. The inquiry also named other suspects, such as suspended police commissioner Fannie Masemola and alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who face charges of fraud, corruption, money‑laundering and breaches of the Public Finance Management Act.
