Madoka Magica movie tops Japanese box office with 1 billion yen debut

The latest film in the Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise, ‘Walpurgis Night’, debuted at number one at the Japanese box office. Between August 28 and August 31, the film recorded over 1 billion yen in revenue and attracted approximately 583,638 viewers.

This performance marks a faster pace than the 2013 film ‘Rebellion’, which earned roughly 2 billion yen in total. The new installment is a direct sequel to the 2013 movie and features the return of key creative staff, including general director Akiyuki Shinbo and screenwriter Gen Urobuchi.

In the weekend rankings, the film surpassed ‘Chiikawa: The Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island’, which previously held the top spot. Other notable films in the rankings included ‘Toy Story 5’ and ‘Spider-Man: A Brand New Day’.
