Madoka Magica 2026 film rollout
Overview
The Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise has commenced its theatrical rollout following a 13-year hiatus. The release of ‘Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising’ has been accompanied by significant promotional efforts across Asia. In Japan, a promotional stage greeting was held on 29 August 2026 at Shinjuku Wald 9, featuring the voice cast and Shaft President Mitsutoshi Kubota, who highlighted technical advancements such as 4K resolution and optimized audio for IMAX and Dolby Atmos.
Following its release on 28 August, the film achieved significant box office success. It reached the 1 billion yen milestone in just four days and surpassed 1.5 billion yen within ten days. By 25 September, the film’s revenue exceeded 2.1 billion yen, surpassing the total earnings of its predecessor, ‘Rebellion’, which earned 2.08 billion yen. The film also surpassed 1 million admissions within 17 days of its premiere. Upcoming screenings are scheduled to include Dolby Cinema and 4DX/MX4D formats, alongside promotional distributions of special postcards illustrated by Studio Shaft in late September.
Directed by Yukihiro Miyamoto under the supervision of Akiyuki Shimbo, the film reunites Studio SHAFT with screenwriter Gen Urobuchi. The story explores themes of salvation versus selfishness following the actions of Akemi Homura. On 15 September 2026, Aniplex released a new trailer after lifting previous spoiler restrictions. Because the trailer contains significant plot revelations, production teams have advised viewers to exercise caution to avoid major spoilers. The trailer was accompanied by a new promotional illustration, fueling fan theories regarding the franchise's future.
