Ragusa launches 80‑year Madonna del Carmine festivities
The city of Ragusa will begin its Madonna del Carmine celebrations on Wednesday, 1 July, marking the 80th anniversary of the Carmelite order’s foundation in the city. The program includes evening rosaries, masses and community performances from 1 July through 5 July, with participation from local officials such as Mayor Giuseppe Cassì and Assessor Giovanni Gurrieri, as well as police, volunteers and sponsors. Father Gianni Iacono, rector of the sanctuary, highlighted the event’s role in uniting generations and sustaining the city’s spiritual identity.
The Madonna del Carmine feast is also observed in numerous towns across Italy, from Avellino to Atripalda, where traditional masses, novenas and fairs accompany the religious observance. Historical records note that the celebration has long shaped local customs and community life, often replacing older patron saint festivals.
