Former Tamil Nadu minister and DMK MLA Anitha R. Radhakrishnan was released on bail by a Tiruchendur court on July 4 after a week‑long detention linked to a defamation case over remarks against Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Earlier, the Madras High Court had denied his anticipatory bail, leading to his arrest and protests by DMK supporters.

The ruling TVK government, led by CM Vijay, is facing further scrutiny over the September 2025 stampede in Karur that killed 41 people. The DMK has petitioned the Supreme Court for a gag order on TVK leaders to prevent public statements that could influence the ongoing CBI investigation, and it has called for action against a minister alleged to have tampered with witnesses.

Amid the controversy, the chief minister is scheduled to travel to Karur on July 10 to meet victims' families and announce government job appointments for one eligible member of each bereaved family, a move seen as both humanitarian aid and political outreach ahead of upcoming elections.
