Madrid and Extremadura face teacher protests and salary disputes

In Madrid, the regional government's proposal for a horizontal professional career has failed to quell teacher unrest. The plan introduces six professional grades based on merit and service, offering salary increases of up to 350 euros per month at the highest level. Despite this, the CSIF union has maintained a protest schedule starting September 22, including a planned strike on October 14. Education Counselor Mercedes Zarzalejo criticized the strike as 'political, unnecessary, unjust and irresponsible.'

Separately, in Extremadura, the CCOO union has rejected the Teacher Salary Homologation Agreement and the Horizon+ Plan 2027-2030. The union broke solidarity with other organizations, arguing that the proposal lacks a binding clause to ensure Extremadura remains among the top ten Spanish regions for teacher compensation. The proposed salary increases include 80 euros in 2026, 40 euros in 2027, and 30 euros annually through 2030, totaling an additional 130 euros per pay period by the end of the term.
